DefinitionElaborative strategies facilitate the integration of new knowledge into an existing knowledge structure by helping to make associations between the two. Elaborative learning strategies promote retention because through them new information is "networked" with existing knowledge and when the new information is then later searched for in memory, multiple paths lead to the information to be remembered. Thus, these are learning activities aimed at a deeper understanding of the material. Mnemonics and a critical examination of statements in a text are also elaboration strategies
