Dimension: Mode of Strategy Instruction

DefinitionStrategies of self-regulated learning can be taught in different ways. The ATES distinguishes four modes of instruction: demonstrating, explaining, inquiring, and demanding. The modes refer to the teacher's remarks and actions. It is not about the grammatical structure of the remark, i.e., whether a statement ends with an exclamation mark, or is phrased in the form of one. Rather, it is about the content of the remark. A statement of the teacher can be formulated in the grammatical form of a question and still be coded as a demand: “Can you please quickly put the books back in the cupboard?”

Items der Skala

Item-Formulierung
Teacher to students: “Tastes solid? Feels rather solid! It can't actually taste solid!
I would like you to read the sheet (...) and enter the correct terms below.
This is an example for a tidy table!
Can you also write which one is bigger than the other? Try to compare - give it a try.
You'll find out after you read.
Do you still have things on the table that you would like to pick up? If you don't want to pick them up, please put them away.
How do you come up with this?
“Who has an idea about what to do next?” (Referring to what happens next in class)
“And how do we know when 20 minutes are up?” (...) “And where do we pour the water?” (Related to what tools are needed for an experiment)
Are there only forests with deciduous trees or forests with conifers? We were in the forest (...), what did the forest look like?
“Do you still have a leaf from a tree that is not yet hanging here in front?” (Related to the completeness of the picture on the board)
Where are your leaves? Just that we still have them when we discuss in a moment.
