Dimension: Duration

DefinitionIn the ATES, the duration of strategy instructions is documented to record a quantitative feature in addition to the qualitative classification of the strategy instruction: The number of seconds a strategy instruction lasts. Intervals of 60 seconds each are coded. However, it makes a big difference whether within such an interval a strategy instruction took place for only a few seconds (i.e., the utterance of the teacher was very short) or whether the interval served almost completely for the strategy instruction (some teacher utterances run even over several intervals). To capture this difference, and to avoid equating a short teacher utterance that lasts only a few seconds with a longer instruction of a complete minute, the ATES allows us to co-record the duration of strategy instruction with binary code. The ATES distinguishes between strategy instructions that last up to 15 seconds (15 s) and those that last at least 16 seconds (> 15 s): 1 – 15 s (=1) and 16 s upwards (=2) Responses from the students do not count (even if they are busy using SRL strategies). If a concrete strategy placement extends over the mark to the new minute, the duration is counted on, and the strategy is not encoded again unless it extends more than 9 seconds into the newly started minute interval.
