Kategorie: Constructive Learning
DefinitionIn order to stimulate SRL, learning cannot take place in a passive and receptive way, but through an active building of associations to the students’ prior knowledge (Limón, 2001), which is ensured by the condition of constructive learning. The teacher therefore needs to provide a learning environment that enables students to integrate new information into existing knowledge structures. In addition, the teacher has to motivate students to understand and learn the content (e.g., through cognitive conflict). In order to encourage active participation in knowledge construction, students should work through complex, less structured or open-ended problems that can only be solved through a deeper understanding of the topic (Dolmans et al. 2005).
