Kategorie: Self-determination

DefinitionSelf-determination flourishes, when a more or less structured learning environment allows for effective autonomy in students, balancing the students’ ability to make their own decisions and the teacher’s role in supporting this. The quantity of the condition of self-determination captures, whether the teacher allows the students to participate in the planning, selection, and implementation of activities. Students can make their own decisions about their learning (e.g., what, when, how long, where, with whom, with what material, to achieve what goal). Individualized instruction, work with weekly plans, station work, project work, interdisciplinary learning, etc. are ways to implement a certain degree of self-determination in the classroom. The quality refers to whether students can take responsibility for their learning within a limited scope whilst the teacher monitors the appropriateness of students' choices, serves as a liaison when students encounter a problem, and structures instruction.
