Dimension: Learning Environment
DefinitionIn addition to the direct promotion of self-regulation, students’ self-regulated learning can be activated indirectly, through the design of a powerful learning environment that requires and allows the students to practice self-regulation. A high-inferent coding instrument was developed to measure (quantity and quality of) four characteristics of the learning environment. These characteristics are conditions of the learning environment that enhance SRL, and include cooperative learning, constructive learning, self-determination, and transfer. Coding of indirect SRL activation is done over the course of the lesson with the help of 9 items rated on a four-level scale (1 = never observable; 2 = rarely observable; 3 = often observable; 4 = mainly observable).

The teacher uses forms of cooperative learning during class (1 = 0 min; 2 = <25% of teaching time; 3 = 25% - 75% of teaching time; 4 = > 75% of teaching time)
The teacher takes care that the students really work together cooperatively and intervenes if necessary.
The teacher prompts the students to activate prior knowledge to integrate new knowledge.
The teacher integrates new knowledge in a meaningful context and/or introduces new knowledge by creating a cognitive conflict.
The teacher gives complex and/or open and/or marginally structured problems which can be handled in different ways and/or allow several solutions.
The teacher allows the students to take responsibility for structuring their learning by giving them some freedom of decision-making.
There is a balance between self-directed and teacher-directed learning.
Learning is integrated in a real-life context.
The teacher illuminates the learning contents in diverse contexts and/or in diverse ways of looking at a problem from different perspectives/ generates different perspectives.
